A model of media

Britney Spears

Britney Spears song Hold it against me shows Britney rejecting her past. Here is the music video of Hold it against me.

In this music video there was product placement promoting the product. One of the products was Britney Spears perfume. In this music video it shows Britney Spears facing her past as in the music video she is surrounded by TVs which are playing her old music videos. Further on in the music video she is shooting paint at the TV and fighting herself which means she is fighting her past. Also she is in the middle and surrounded by TV like she is imprisoned by her own past.

Britney Spears song ...baby one more time

This song has a completely different style to it than Hold it against me. This song was Britney's debut studio and was released on January 12 1999.  This song became an international success as the song became popular around the world. This song is very different to hold it against me for many reasons, one being the costumes they use as in hold it against me she is wearing a wedding dress.

permission to use music

This is the message we sent to the band. We found the band on unsigned.com and they have not been active seen 2009 so it was very hard to get in contact with the band. All their social networks accounts have been closed and all we had was this email. We sent they an email asking for permission but we have not had any email back. As they haven't got back to us we are assuming they no longer use or monitor that email address. We have decided to still use the song anyway.

Seven days music video lyrics

I don't really want to
I don't really need to
Really would have been to
Cause it still won't please you
Know the path i'm going down
Know the way i want to live
So yo don't have to try in the
Sea of emptiness

Chorus (P1)
You only have one chance in life
So make sure that you get it right
so what you really want to know.

Chorus (P2)
So don't give up.
Don't give in
Don't let all the people in
Make you feel like
you were wrong
You were hooolding on

   This is not about me
This is not about you
Open up your eyes and see
You know what you need to do

History of pop video

Bing Crosby
Bing Crosby was the biggest star in the world in the 1940's. Many fans would see him in videos where he would sing his music. Bing Crosby real name Harry Lillis Crosby Jr and was an american singer and actor.

This is one of Bing Crosby's popular songs it is called White christmas.
Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra replaced Bing Crosby as the worlds biggest star. Frank Sinatra was a singer, actor and filmmaker and they all helped him get popular. He found success as a solo artist in the mid 1940s after being signed by columbia records.

This is one of Frank Sinatra popular songs it is called I've got the world on a string.
Elvis Presley
If fans wanted to see Elvis Presley live they would have to fly out to america as Elvis would not tour in any other country. Elvis is known as the king of Rock and Roll also Elvis marked the birth of   Roll.

This is one of Elvis Presley more popular song Suspicious Mind.

The Beatles
The Beatles were very poplular in the 60's and would tour around the world. Before music videos the only way for fans to see their favourite band they would have to go to live concerts. The Beatles got fed up with this becuase they couldn't even hear themselves sing. So they decided to film a music video so people could hear their music.

Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin had identified some of the features in music videos. Andrew Goodwin who was in Dancing in Distraction Factory which was released in 1992. There are key features in a music video. For example there is a relationship between the lyrics of the song and the visuals of the video (they could go with or go against the music video). There are demands of the records label would include the need for close ups of the singer and band this way artists sometime develop motifs for example Micheal Jackson's glove. This helps the artist as people will remember the artist easier as each time they see the mostif of that artist they will instantly remember the artist. Also music videos demostrate certain charactistics for example boy/girl bands dance routines.

Other features in music videos are the representation of women in music videos. The representation of women in music videos are very similar to how they are represented in films. Women are viewed as the objects of male erotic desire in films and music videos. This links with Laura Mulvey theories of  the male gaze.  Also music videos demostrate certain genre characteristics such as in boy/girl bands have dance routines.

Here are Andrew Goodwin's 5 theories:
1.Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).

2.There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

3.The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style) EG Katy Perry / Michael Jackson (to be analysed in separate blogs).

4.There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

5.There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc).

Relation of visuals to song
There are 3 types of visuals to songs illustrate, Amplify, Disjuncture. Illustrate is a music videos which uses a set of images to show the meaning of the lyrics & genre this is the most common one used. The second type of visual of songs is Amplify which is when the meanings and effects are manipulated and constantly shown (images get repeated). The final one is Disjuncture and is when the meaning of the song is completly ignored so if the lyrics are happy and the video is sad this would be disjuncture.

An example of Amplify is Rather Be by Clean Bandit.

An example of Illustrate is Beat it by Michael Jackson.

An example of Disjuncture is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

Rough Sketch/Explanation of location and key points to note
We want to film in some built up area to add pace to the scene and also a wide-open spaced area.

Access to location via: We will use public transport in order to get to the location(s) that we want the film our video in.

Name and number of location contact: As we are filming in a public place there is no need for a location contact.

Health and Safety Issues to note:

Always be careful when working on wet ground to avoid slipping. As we are in a public place there will be obstacles that we will need to avoid e.g. lamp posts and cars.
Potential Filming Problems:

Members of the public may cause a problem as we will have to avoid getting them in shot, which could be difficult especially in the built up locations that we were planning on filming.

Additional Notes: keep an eye on the weather forecast as we don’t want to risk damaging any camera equipment.
Camera, Tripod and a monopod.
Potentially a dolly

Band profile

07 seven days is the band we are going to use for music video as it will be easy to lip sync. The song we are going to use is Don't give up and the lyrics are quite easy to lip sync to. The pace of the song slow and will be easy to relate a music video to.

There bio reads Seven Days formed Feb. 2009. Started with a lead singer (Jeff) and guitarist (Jeremy). Sharing song writing ideas, realising that their style and ideas were a match and ideas started flowing. Later added a bass player (Matt) and drummer (Steve). "River of Sorrow"  their first studio cut has been met with great reviews. Seven Days is currently working on a demo album.  Although just getting started they are very excited to see the positive response from fans."

Elton John lip sync

 Evaluation
What we had to do?
First we choose who would be doing what. Afterwards we did the song 5 times so get 5 different camera angles/shots. Then when we had finished filming the music video we went on the computers and edited the music video. We used the ideas of from the Foo Fighters blog about how to edit a music video. We realised that music videos are edited differently from thrillers as they are edited faster and have more edits than a thriller.

What we learned from it? & How it is different from editing a thriller?
We learned how to edit a music video and how it is different from editing a thriller. We learned that in music videos are edited much faster than thrillers as in music videos each shot only lasts for a few seconds whereas in thrillers shots can last longer.  We also learned that music videos take longer to edit as you have to link up the lip sync with the music video.

Title: Music video- Seven Days- Don't Give Up
Synopsis:

When we go out and film, we're going to attempt to film a dramatic/tragic narrative, to fit the mood of the music. We aiming to achieve in filming the feeling of loneliness and despair, thus using amplification within our project to match both music and video. We will make this vision a reality by only featuring one character in the video, this will better illustrate the struggle that the person is going through and will have a greater impact on the audience. At the end of the video the main  character will get through the rough time and see happiness.
Key Genre Conventions:

Amplification:  By using slow, low action footage, we're matching the slow depressive, but ultimately hopeful feel of the music to be reflected in our video. The chorus it an upbeat part of the song which will help us illustrate the determination the main character.

Contradiction: In our video the main theme is sadness however when the chorus comes in the video turns a bit happier.
